I started this blog to document my journey to become more in touch with the world around me. Even though I work from home, I struggle with balance. So many things in my modern life feel out of harmony. I want to slow down, and as the Buddhists would say, “chop wood, carry water.” To me, this means giving thought to what I am consuming and to be fully in the present moment.
As much as possible, I want to try to live in a sustainable, self-sufficient way. I know that my definition of this will either be stricter or laughable depending on your frame of reference. We all decide these things for ourselves. Hopefully, this experiment will lead to healthier living for me and possibly for my husband, while providing you with entertainment.

wow…I am speachless.
This blog is like a window into your soul and I am moved by the view of the amazing woman that you have become.
I loved every entry and was especially touched by your memories of summers with Gramme & Grandpa. I’m sure that it meant a lot to them to read the impact that they had on your childhood. And, The Children’s Bllizzard! What a tragic story, I’ll have to read it sometime when I want a good cry.
This is a beautiful, heart-warming blog and I look forward to reading about your continuing adventures in creating a wholesome life for you & Mark.
Love you, Becca!
Thanks for sharing. I know what you mean about slowing down. I moved from New York (near NYC, where everyone’s in a hurry) to New Mexico (where everyone takes their time) and it was a big adjustment. I’m learning to be more laid-back, but it’s a work in progress. After all, worrying frantically isn’t emotionally sustainable…!
Best of luck,
Krystle
I wanted to learn how to make yogurt and found your blog! Thanks for sharing! I am in search of a more self sufficient life style as well. Good to know I’m not totally out in left field, there are others.

So glad to have found your blog…I’ll add you to my bloglines.
I love coming across other peoples blogs who are pursuing the same dream, of becoming sustainable. It encourages and inspires me! It’s like having a support group at my finger tips, although the blogger is maybe continents away! Thanks for your wonderful blog! I will be reading it often to get new ideas as well as a place to be encouraged that I am not alone in my en devours!
I am adding you to my blog list because it looks like we have very similar interests. I am off to read older posts now!!
Thanks Lisa!
Every time I read this blog, I feel blessed to be the fortunate husband of the author — and the chief beneficiary of the food created by its recipes. Keep up the wonderful, original work.
Love,
Mark
Hi!
I just happened to stumble across your blog and just love it! I too am working on living a simple, sustainable life and your blog is an inspiration! Thanks.
Hello! Your blog was the first thing that came up in my google search for “Little House on the Prairie maple syrup candy” and I had to laugh because I have always wanted to try it as well and failed miserably.
Anyway- I really like the concept of this blog. I have found myself drawn to making a sustainable lifestyle more and more- being more in tune with nature, seasons, moon cycles, and just paying attention. Kudos to you! I’ll definitely be reading more!

Hello! This blog was the first result after my google search: “Little House on the Prairie maple syrup candy” … I had to laugh, since we seem to have had similar misfortunes actually making the stuff!
Anyway- Kudos to you! I too have recently been getting back to nature- being more observant of the world, eating seasonally, making more food from scratch (next challenge is authentic sourdough … ) It has certainly helped me be a more conscious individual and have a new respect for the people who lived without our modern conveniences! I’m looking forward to reading more of your adventures.

I just discovered your blog last week. I could spend all day reading your posts! They are so interesting and fun! I’ve only gotten as far as mid-November 2007 in trying to read them all. I have to stop myself from sitting too long at the computer catching up on your adventures in the old fashioned. I love the jeans rug and want to make one myself. “Bravo!” to you on pursuing your passions, trying new-but-old things, and making the lives of yourself, your husband and those in your world so much richer by your tenacious curiosity, creativity and adventuresomeness!
