Ah the joys of organic patio farming! Today I woke up to discover that my first batch of kale is half eaten, and not by me! My husband and I love kale, and I was so looking forward to these winter greens, but now I have to go do research on organic pest deterrents. Unfortunately, I can’t figure out what is eating them, which is going to be a problem in figuring out what to use.
I’m a little scared that I do in fact know what’s eating them though. For the last two weeks, I have had the most beautiful caterpillars munching away on my parsley. They are very slow eaters, and are much too pretty for me (the bleeding heart vegetarian) to kill. I haven’t seen them on the kale, but they are the only thing that I’ve seen munching on my garden. I’m hoping that if I start the kale over again in another part of the garden, that they will be peacefully content with the offering of fully grown parsley instead of kale seedlings. Although, I suppose my kale is a small price to pay for such beauty.
