Sometimes I think that my hubby is the world’s luckiest husband. This morning, I made crullers for the first time. For those of you that have never had real crullers, they are amazing. These are not the cake donuts shaped like sticks that you would find at Dunken Donuts. Cullers are much denser and they are very crispy. Traditionally, they are covered in powered sugar and are deep brown in color. My dad used to pick them up from a family bakery in New Jersey, but I have never seen them anywhere else, so when I found a recipe for them, I couldn’t help giving it a try.
The ones that I made this morning were very good, but the instructions on how to shape them left a little to be desired. They ended up too thin, so instead of a crispy outside and doughy inside, they were crispy almost all the way through. I still have half the batch of dough left and I am planning on trying again tomorrow. I will post the recipe once I’ve perfected it, so that everyone can revel in the crispy, sugary, goodness that is a real cruller.
