I haven’t been able to get up the stamina to hull the black walnuts yet, but I have started the acorns on their way to becoming people food.
I found a few websites that have mentioned that if you soak the acorns, they will pop open. I am keeping my fingers crossed on this, because the information is a bit scattered. One website says that it will take a day and another website says that it will take up to 2 weeks, so I have very little idea when my acorns will be ready to move to the next step. The nice thing about soaking them to pop the shells off is that I have about 7 pounds of nuts, and even though they have a soft shell, this will save me a ton of time.
The other benefit is that I have found a bunch of horticulture websites that say that most of the insect infested ones will float to the top in 12-16 hours. This spares me the bother of cracking open nuts only to find out that they have been already eaten by someone else.
